About the Department
The Department of Mathematical Sciences (as was the name of the Department originally), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata, was born on June 25, 2009 with Professor Amitabha Bagchi as the Chairman. The Department was renamed
as the Department of Mathematics and Statistics on January 12, 2011.
To face the changing scenario in scientific research, the Department encourages interdisciplinary PhD program which, will obnubilate the boundaries among the traditional subjects and elevate interdisciplinary research. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is committed towards high ethical values (which are obscured now-a-days), and concerned for social and environmental awareness.
To impart training to students with a view to create competent and motivated academicians, the Department tries to inculcate human values, and encourages independent thinking in the students for the benefit of the society. The Department is trying its best to excel in the academic environment. It has taken a few steps in its pursuit of excellence — recruitment of new faculty members, time-to-time review of course curricula, organizing conferences, workshops, seminars etc. It strives for excellence through research and excellent teaching driven by curiosity and creativity. ...
The Department invites applications from highly motivated young researchers for faculty positions. Those who have finished his/her PhD with a good academic record, and have at last one year of post-doctoral experience and are motivated towards teaching and research may also apply for the post of Assistant Professor (on contract), which is initially for a period of one year and extendable up to another year depending upon the performance of the candidate. After an experience of three years with satisfactory teaching and research, a candidate may be absorbed as a permanent faculty member in the Department. A candidate who has at least three years of teaching/ research experience after PhD can apply for a permanent post of Assistant Professor. A candidate having INSPIRE Fellowship may also apply.
